Katy is a city in the U.S. state of Texas. It is in the Greater Katy area, itself forming the western part of the Greater Houston metropolitan area. Homes and businesses may have Katy postal addresses without being in the City of Katy. The city of Katy is approximately centered at the tripoint of Harris, Fort Bend, and Waller counties.
The City of Katy, Texas is a very small area surrounded by the Greater Katy area. The City itself has 14,102 residents as of the 2010 census (16,000 is the 2017 estimate), while the greater Katy area has an estimated 300,000 residents living within the Katy Independent School District boundaries as of 2015.
Many – live between Katy and Houston – those areas have "Katy" addresses and are referred to as the "Katy Area", while the city proper is known as "Old Katy". Because of this, the "Greater Katy" area has a population of over 250,000. Several developments are located in this area, including Cinco Ranch, Kelliwood, and various other communities.
