I found a pretty good deal on a stainless steel turkey fryer, and the pot is 30 quarts. I only plan on doing 5 gallon all grain batches, but I know that after sparging, pre-boil volumes can be 7 gallons or so. So, assuming I get seven gallons of wort, I'd be left with two quarts worth of space...
Bottom line is I got a really nice, heavy, 10 gallon brew with spigot for just over $100 ($65 + tax for the pot at Ace Restarant Supply + $32 + $10 shipping for the fitting). Now I want to add a thermometer fitting or thermo/sight glass combo fitting.
30 quarts is 7.5 gallons, so 8 gallons is more.
So I just used my original regulator and burner and boiled 14 gallons of water in about 45 minutes from 150 degrees. It's a little slow but it doesn't matter that much to me on brew day. If I can save an extra day of brewing (5+ hours) with a 10 gallon batch and it takes 45 minutes longer for the boil I'm still good.
Overall, it seems like a pretty decent starter kit for the money. It should be sufficient for 3 gallon BIAB or 5 gallon extract kits. If you weren’t interested in the pot, the burner seems pretty decent and is inexpensive. I’ll let you know how it holds up after I have brewed in it. So far I’ve just done a couple boils.
For 10 gallon batches in a 15.5 gallon vessel, I do 24 pounds of grain mashed in 12 gallons of strike water at 2 qt/lb thickness, then sparge with 3.5 gallons after removing the grain bag. This gets me up to a 6% ABV beer without having to add extract or sugar to boost the alcohol content while filling two five gallon kegs.
I'm purchasing my primary brew kettle and have settled on a Concord SS pot. Amazon has both 80 and 60 qt versions for around the same price. I plan on 5 gallon batches with the possibility of moving on to 10 gallon batches in the future. 10 gallon batches would be way down the line I imagine...
What is the largest size pot people typically recommend for a regular kitchen gas stove? Can most gas stoves handle a 30 qt pot? I assume electric stoves generally have a smaller capacity? I'm talking more about damage to the stove, than variation in boil volume and time. Thanks Aaron
The 23 qt has a capacity of 7 Quart jars or 19 Pint jars I gather that they're about the same size around and the big canner is taller. There's only about 6 bucks price difference so the price isn't an issue.
Comes with Burner, regulator, hose and a 30 qt alum pot. My local Walmart had it in stock, even though it says out of stock online. Check the ship to store or local store inventory checker. I used it for my 3 gal extract brews. Easy to bring to temp, and easy to hold from boil overs.
