On February 17, 1902, papers were filed with the Anne Arundel County Circuit Court by the Annapolis Emergency Hospital Association to establish a local hospital. Land was purchased on March 31 of that year at the corner of Franklin and Cathedral Streets in downtown Annapolis, Maryland. On July 18, 1902, the Annapolis Emergency Hospital opened.
This hospital opened as North Arundel Hospital in 1965 with three floors and limited acute care services. In 2000, North Arundel Hospital joined into UMMS and in 2005, the name was changed to UM Baltimore Washington Medical Center to reflect the hospital's growth in size and greater regionality from expanded services. The hospital was created by an act of the Maryland General Assembly on May 5, 1959, and construction commenced soon after. [1] The facility is named for Dr. Clifton T. Perkins, a psychiatrist and former head of the Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene. [1]
