PBS was founded on November 11, 1975 as Xandir Malta and became joint member of the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) together with the Maltese Broadcasting Authority (MBA). The latter was previously admitted as a full, active member, as Malta Television Service Ltd already has been, in 1970. Since 2003, PBS is the sole Maltese member of EBU.
TVM+ (formerly TVMNews+ and originally TVM2) [1] is a terrestrial television network in Malta, operated by national broadcaster Public Broadcasting Services that was launched in 2012. Unlike the more wide-ranging TVM network, TVM+ focuses primarily on newscasting and educational television.
In October 2011, PBS announced a full overhaul of the TVM brand, to mark 50 years since the establishment of the Malta Television Service in 2012. The new branding pays homage to previous TVM identities, and makes use of the Maltese cross, which features heavily in the 2010s' L-Aħbarijiet title sequence .

Malta transitioned terrestrial broadcasts to digital television using the DVB-T standard in October 2011. [5] In preparation for the transition, the Malta Broadcasting Authority developed a General Interest Objectives classification to determine which existing terrestrial channels would be assigned to the digital subchannels of the new digital free-to-air broadcasting system.
