The settlement dates back to 1845 when Governor William Owsley deeded 500 acres (2.0 km 2; 0.78 sq mi) on top of Brush Mountain in the Appalachian Mountains.Brothers C. and R.M. Bales, who received the land from Owsley, leased the acreage to John Nichols and Jim Nelson, who mostly used the property for livestock.

The Bennett Hiatt Log House, near Renfro Valley, Kentucky, is a log house built in 1828. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1984. [1] The house was built originally as a one-and-a-half-story single pen; an extension was added after the Civil War. There are six contributing buildings on the property. [2]
