IMSA GTO cars at Road Atlanta in 1981. Grand Touring Over (GTO) [1] is the name of a former classification designated to grand touring cars competing in the IMSA GT Championship, and later by Grand-Am in the Rolex Sports Car Series. IMSA used the class between 1971 and 1991, [2] and Grand-Am used the class for a single season in 2000.
Auto racing is a racing sport where automobiles are raced through a course. The objective is usually to cover a fixed distance in the least amount of time (e.g. Indianapolis 500). In some cases, this is reversed so that the objective is to cover the greatest distance in a fixed amount of time (e.g. 24 Hours of Le Mans).
In historic racing, they are often called "sports racing cars". Sometimes, they are metonymically referred to as "Le Mans cars", as the 24 Hours of Le Mans has been closely associated with the category in recent decades and features entries from several of the main championships contested by prototypes.
In 2018 Chiba announced an auction of many former Taisan racing cars dating back to the early 1990s, including several JGTC and Super GT machines. [2] Chiba also announced at the conclusion of the 2018 Super GT season that the team would cease participation in Super GT, instead concentrating solely on electric motorsports.
