This is a list of galaxies that are well known by something other than an entry in a catalog or list, or a set of coordinates, or a systematic designation.
100 Notable Galaxies. An A-to-Z list of 100 notable galaxies of the night sky. Dim, diffuse objects like galaxies require lots of telescope aperture and are ideal for viewing with a dobsonian telescope. Also see the Local Group of Galaxies.
A galaxy is a system of stars, stellar remnants, interstellar gas, dust, dark matter, bound together by gravity. The word is derived from the Greek galaxias, literally 'milky', a reference to the Milky Way galaxy that contains the Solar System.
Because there are so many galaxies in the universe, this list has been divided into several categories. The first catalog that catalogues galaxies is the Catalogue of Galaxies and of Clusters of Galaxies. This is list of nearby galaxies to the Milky Way Galaxy, our galaxy.
The following is a list of notable galaxies. There are about 51 galaxies in the Local Group (see list of nearest galaxies for a complete list), on the order of 100,000 in the Local Supercluster, and an estimated 100 billion in all of the observable universe.
Galaxy clusters are gravitationally bound groupings of galaxies, numbering from the hundreds to the tens of thousands. This is an alphabetically ordered list of selected galaxies and galaxy clusters. (See also astronomy; cosmology; list of stars; nebula; protogalaxy; star cluster; supercluster.)
Below you will find a list of nearby galaxies ordered by distance starting from the ones closer to our own galaxy, the Milky Way. Most of these galaxies are found in what astronomers call the local group, which is a bunch of galaxies that are relatively close to each other and that contain the Milky Way.
