We have a 2002 sm 74 and we run our press with the vario always on and have had no wear issues. You need to know that if your going to run with or without it on that the heidelberg manual has different settings for the rollers, with vario or without. This doesnt have to do with the bridge roller as you can turn that off and on at the console.

Recalling from my time the with Heidelberg, during the instructional phase of a new press installation and troubleshooting print issues on a machine already in production, the Heidelberg instructors clearly stressed the importance of maintaining factory packing specs.
I am retired from the printing industry but I've run most of the small duplicators to the big Heidelberg SORSZ, SORKZ and SORDZ. But my favorite press by far is the KOR-series. It's the press I have most experience on (9 years total) and most of that time I spent on a KORS which is the 28" press - but essentially it's the same as the KORD.

As mentioned roller condition and settings are critical, but this press should be able to handle the image posted. I believe there's also a couple of rollers below in the ink train that engage/disengage with lever(s) to change the direction of ink traveling through the ink train.
