I was thinking that Ellen Geer (Will's Daughter) guest starred several times. However, sitting here today I can only think of 3 ~ when she played the wife of the man that John Boy "bought" his car from, the mother of the Jewish boy who moved to Walton's Mountain and wanted to have his bar mitzva (sp) and the Sister of Sweet Billy in the episode ...
Earl Hamner described Will Geer "As a national treasure", and so he was. Born in Frankfort Indiana in 1902, William Auge Geer would, in his 76 years, have a significant impact on the American theater and make an everlasting Impression as Zebulon Walton. Mr. Geer's career, which covered six decades, began in tent shows and on river boats.
What a great place Will Geer's theatre company has! When my family and I went in CA in 2004 for the Waltons reunion, we spent an afternoon there, enjoying the plants, trees and flowers, swinging on the Walton type swing (like on the front porch) and seeing Ellen Geer (Will's daughter) and the rest of the players) rehearsing.
Will Geer died while they were on hiatus, and this episode provided closure for them. At the end of The Homecoming, John said he wasn't returning to his job at Waynesboro. He said they would live off the land, and he mentioned there was timber he could cut.
Co-starring Will Geer as the Grandfather Waite and Learned were now promoted as the stars, with Geer as the co-star (Waite and Learned actually alternated at the top). But after just a few episodes of season six, Geer’s credit was modified to be “And Will Geer as the Grandfather”.
Now this could easily be great acting from a great actor which I have no doubt Will Geer was but there was a very special very deep relationship between both him and Richard Thomas. In The Thanksgiving Story when John Boy returns from the hospital and sits at the table Grandpa says the prayer again and John Boy leans over and kisses Grandpa ...
As a young child I was captivated by Will Geer and The Grandpa character he portrayed. He was a wise old sage..a gentle, kind soul with the loyalty and devotion of man's best friend, the spirit of someone half his age, a taste for the recipe, and a slight penchant for shenanigans.. 40 years later he still captivates me.
Welcome to The Waltons Forum. This forum is for fans of the classic 1970s television show, The Waltons.
No, Geer wasn't in the original. I don't know the name of the guy that played the grandfather. The grandmother was the same though, and she was really soft-spoken.
As for Will Geer's feelings about Beulah Bondi, I think that it would have been normal for someone as progressive thinking as Will to resent her friendship with people in the industry who testified against other actors, directors, etc. In that McCarthy era, there was little middle ground.
