A 5th-level Bard with a Wisdom of 13, no proficiency in Perception, and the Jack of All Trades 2 feature: the bonus to Perception is wisdom modifier + Jack of All Trades = 1 + 1 = 2; the Passive Perception is 10 + Perception bonus = 10 + 2 = 12. A 5th-level character with a Wisdom of 18, proficiency in Perception, and the Observant 3 feat:
The 5e Bard is a more powerful character than the 3.5e Bard, but not nearly as good at buffing his allies. To start with, the 5e Bard gets full spellcasting all the way up to 9th level spells, where the 3.5e Bard got 2/3 spellcasting, topping out at 6th level spells.
@nitsua60 has covered the wizard; for the bard (PHB p.53): You know four 1st-level spells of your choice from the bard spell list. The Spells Known column of the Bard table shows when you learn more bard spells of your choice. Each of these spells must be of a level for which you have spell slots, as shown on the table.
Every bard spell has a verbal component (singing, reciting, or music). However, I believe that this is actually not intended in 5e, and the reason why can be traced to the capstone ability of the College of Valor, "Battle Magic". At 14th level, you have mastered the art of weaving spellcasting and weapon use into a single harmonious act.
Yes, the Bard adds 1/2 proficiency to initiative. In 5e all checks are ability checks. This is why every check in published materials is listed as Ability (Name), such as Strength (Athletics). Initiative is a Dexterity check. Under Initiative in the PHB:
Because the bard is not able to give herself inspiration, she is necessarily going to spend the majority of her out-of-combat time buffing the party. People love being buffed! And with bounded accuracy being such a huge presence in 5E, the addition of a d6(3.5), d8(4.5), or d10(5.5) to a skill check is huge! It's massive! It's amazing!
The only thing a Swords Bard will ever use Superior Inspiration for is throwing vanilla Bardic Inspiration at their friends. Or if they really want to, they can get a +3 to the average damage of a single blade flourish. Conveniently enough, the Swords Bard is one that would synergize ridiculously well with a single level of Hexblade Warlock.
True Polymorph can turn you into Ki-rin (from volo's guide to monsters) that has true resurrection as a spell. It is a 9th level spell available to Bard, Warlock and Wizard. Shapechange does not give you the spellcasting ability of monsters you turn into, but it still gives Innate spellcasting.
The bard's Jack of All Trades feature says: Starting at 2nd level, you can add half your proficiency bonus, rounded down, to any ability check you make that doesn't already include your proficiency bonus. I was wondering if this meant I added it directly into my abilities (Str:10 + 1) or if I added it to the bonus (Str: 0 + 1)
