Undaunted Courage: Meriwether Lewis, Thomas Jefferson, and the Opening of the American West (ISBN 0684811073), written by Stephen Ambrose, is a 1996 biography of Meriwether Lewis of the Lewis and Clark Expedition. The book is based on journals and letters written by Lewis, William Clark, Thomas Jefferson and the members of the Corps of Discovery.
The book has four historical accounts which describe Hernando de Soto. Volume 1 includes one account each by Luis Hernández de Biedma, Rodrigo Rangel, and a man with the pen name "Gentleman of Elvas". [1] Volume 1 also has a portion of a text by Sebastian de Cañete and a July 9, 1539 letter written by De Soto.
The book is divided into ten sections, each a story or poem written by members of the crew. Illustrations are shown throughout. The sections are as follows: The Ascent of Mount Erubus — T. W. The book includes eight pages of colored paintings by American science fiction and space illustrator, Chesley Bonestell, who also painted the cover. [1] In the Author's Preface to Project Mars: A Technical Tale, written by von Braun in 1950 in Fort Bliss, he states that the purpose of the book is to "stimulate interest in space travel". [7]
