Stockton Creek is a tributary of Mariposa Creek in Mariposa County, California. It was named after Robert F. Stockton who owned a mine and stamp mill during the California Gold Rush. [2] An impoundment on the creek owned by the Mariposa Public Utilities Commission holds a major source of water for the community of Mariposa.
Mariposa County was one of the original 27 counties of California, created at the time of statehood in 1850. While it began as the state's largest county, territory that was once part of Mariposa was ceded over time to form all or part of twelve other counties, including all of Merced, Madera, Fresno, Tulare, Kings, and Kern; and parts of San Benito, Mono, Inyo, San Bernardino, and Los Angeles.

Hites Cove (also called Hite's Cove, less commonly Hite Cove) was a former settlement in Mariposa County, California. [1] It was located on the South Fork of the Merced River, 4.5 miles (7.2 km) west-southwest of El Portal, [2] at an elevation of 1578 feet (481 m). [1] It is accessed via Hites Cove Road.
It may have been here that John C. Fremont's men discovered gold in 1849 on his Rancho Las Mariposas. In 1850, it was a booming trade center and the final destination for many new arrivals in California. It was Mariposa County's first Seat of Justice from February 18, 1850, to November 10, 1851. A post office was established October 7, 1851.
