In February 2022, following the Russian invasion of Ukraine, FIDE decided to move the Chess Olympiad, FIDE Congress and Chess Olympiad for People with Disabilities away from Russia. [22] Shortly after this announcement, the All India Chess Federation (AICF) expressed interest in hosting the events, in either Delhi, Gujarat or Tamil Nadu.
The open event at the 44th Chess Olympiad was held from 29 July to 9 August 2022. It was contested by a record number of 188 teams, representing 186 nations. [1] India, as host nation, fielded three teams. A total of 937 players participated in the open event. [2]
In August 2022, AICF hosted the 44th Chess Olympiad in Chennai, India, which was the first Chess Olympiad ever to take place in the country. [ 7 ] [ 8 ] The event was organised by AICF in association with the International Chess Federation ( FIDE ) and the Tamil Nadu Government.

The 2022 Candidates Tournament was an eight-player chess tournament to decide the challenger for the World Chess Championship 2023. The tournament took place at the Palacio de Santoña in Madrid , Spain , from June 16 to July 5, 2022, [ 2 ] with the World Championship finishing in April 2023. [ 3 ]
