In 1772, Derry Journal was launched and remained the sole title until the 1990s. In the 1990s, the Derry Journal began to expand its stable of papers with the launch of the freesheet Journal Extra in 1992 (City News from February 2001) and in 1995 acquired the Donegal People’s Press and the Donegal Democrat, the biggest paper in neighbouring County Donegal.

Derry-born Downey cut his teeth in journalism, editing University College Galway’s student magazine in the late 1980s. [1] After graduating with an MSc in computing from the University of Ulster, he worked as an entertainment columnist for the Derry Journal and then as a staff reporter with the Londonderry Sentinel, before moving to the Irish News to become the paper’s Derry correspondent.
