The Goose Pond Fish and Wildlife Area occupies a reclaimed area. Much of it was, in former times, the Paul Thompson wetland cattle ranch; parts of the area were surface-mined for coal. Since 2005, the parcel has been under the jurisdiction of the Indiana Department of Natural Resources, with 7,200 acres enrolled in the Wetland Reserve Program. [3]

J.C. Murphey Lake, the park reservoir, was completed in 1951. Most parts of Willow Slough were once formerly grazed, hayed, and cultivated. A railroad also ran through the property at one time, and portions of an old train station can still be found in the area. [1] It was also a mob dumping place for bodies in the 1920s-1980s.
Nearby towns are Angola and Fremont in Indiana, and Coldwater and Kinderhook in Michigan. A mill pond and dam built in 1923 is located at the south end of the lake, where the once-prosperous community of Jamestown is located. The mill was destroyed by fire before WWII but its foundations can still be found.
The lake is fed by several small streams, including Deep River, the largest, and Turkey Creek. It is approximately 3.1 mi (5 km) long, 980 ft (300 m) at its widest, and has a surface area of 270 acres (110 ha). [4] The lake is a popular site for recreation in Hobart.
