When the Service was created in 1974, it was named "The County of Avon Fire Brigade". All fire appliances had "County of Avon" on the sides. The name was changed in 1996 to "Avon Fire Brigade" to show that the County no longer existed. In 2004, the third name change occurred to reflect the nature of current jobs: "Avon Fire and Rescue Service".
The Columbus Division of Fire oversees 35 engine companies, 16 ladder companies, 5 rescue companies, and 40 EMS transport vehicles as well as several special units and reserve apparatus.
