Swansea University (Welsh: Prifysgol Abertawe) is a public research university located in Swansea, Wales, United Kingdom. It was chartered as University College of Swansea in 1920, [4] as the fourth college of the University of Wales.
Swansea University Medical School is a medical school on Swansea University's Singleton campus. It is linked to additional teaching centres located throughout South and West Wales, including Cefn Coed Hospital, Singleton Hospital and Morriston Hospital in Swansea, Prince Philip Hospital in Llanelli, Withybush General Hospital in Haverfordwest and Bronglais Hospital in Aberystwyth.
Swansea Bay University Health Board (SBUHB) (Welsh: Bwrdd lechyd Prifysgol Bae Abertawe) is the local health board of NHS Wales for Swansea and Neath Port Talbot, in the south-west of Wales. Julian Hopkin CBE FRCP FMedSci FLSW is a physician, researcher and medical teacher. In 2004, he became the founding head of the new Medical School at Swansea University. [1] He is now Professor of Experimental Medicine at Swansea University Medical School [2] and Honorary Physician at the Abertawe-Bro-Morgannwg (ABM) University Hospital.
In 2002, the University of Wales Swansea reported that the hospital had to lock up patients due to understaffing. [ 2 ] Work started in 2009 to build modern replacement mental-health accommodation and facilities, including Ysbryd y Coed, which is purpose-built for patients with dementia , in the grounds of Cefn Coed .
The Modern Architecture building was designed by Norman Thomas of the Percy Thomas Partnership in the late 1950s under the guidance of the university's Principal John Fulton. The building is a large H-plan block projecting wings and a glazed curtain wall of 17 bays to a taller central block, faced mainly in brown brick. [ 2 ]
