Japan accepted the UNESCO World Heritage Convention on 30 June 1992. [3] There are 26 sites listed in Japan, with a further four sites on the tentative list. [3] Japan's first entries to the list took place in 1993, when four sites were inscribed. The most recent site, the Sado mine, was listed in 2024.
In 794, the Japanese imperial family moved the capital to Heian-kyō. The locations are in three cities: Kyoto and Uji in Kyoto Prefecture; and Ōtsu in Shiga Prefecture; Uji and Ōtsu border Kyoto to the south and north, respectively. Of the monuments, 13 are Buddhist temples, three are Shinto shrines, and one is a castle.
A Registered Monument (登録記念物, tōroku kinen butsu) includes Historic Sites, Places of Scenic Beauty, and Natural Monuments registered (as opposed to designated, for which see Monuments of Japan) in accordance with the Law for the Protection of Cultural Properties 1950.

The Yakushi Triad at Yakushi-ji is known for being one of the most well-known icons in Japan [2] as well as one of the earliest example of T’ang style used in Japan. [10] The Nara Period is evident in the Yakushi Triad due to the idea that they are wooden sculptures, which was used among sculptors in this time period. [ 11 ]
