The Maine Island Trail Association (abbreviated MITA) is a grassroots, volunteer-run conservation and preservation group based in Portland, Maine, United States.It was co-founded by David Getchell Sr. in 1988, following a land survey, conducted by the State of Maine, of the state's uninhabited coastal islands.
There are 3,200 islands off the coast of Maine, [1] the largest being Mount Desert Island. The Maine Island Trail is a recreational water trail that spans the entire coast of Maine, connecting over 200 islands (having originally been thirty) [1] and mainland sites available for day visits or overnight camping. [2]
Bar Island, which is part of the same geological formation, is occasionally considered a part of the Porcupines as well. All of the islands, except for Burnt Porcupine, are maintained by the National Park Service through Acadia National Park (which is situated on the larger Mount Desert Island that the archipelago comes off). The Maine Coastal Island Registry (CIR) catalogs 3,166 of these coastal islands, along with some notable inland freshwater islands, such as Frye Island in Sebago Lake. According to the most recent CIR data, 1,846 islands are registered to private owners, while 204 islands, which contain four or more structures, are exempt from registration.

[5] Just to the north of Bar Island is Stage Island, also formerly called "the Bluffs", which is an esker. Early literature refers to it as an upland.
