In the late 1980s, the Hong Kong Government anticipated a strong demand for university graduates to fuel an economy increasingly based on services. The HKU Li Ka Shing Faculty of Medicine [a] (branded as HKUMed) is the medical school of the University of Hong Kong (HKU), a public research university. It was founded in 1887 as the Hong Kong College of Medicine for Chinese, one of the oldest western medical schools in the Asia–Pacific region, and which served as the base for HKU's founding in 1910.
