The National Museum of Korea (Korean: 국립중앙박물관) is the flagship museum of Korean history and art in South Korea. Since its establishment in 1945, [2] the museum has been committed to various studies and research activities in the fields of archaeology, history, and art, continuously developing a variety of exhibitions and education programs.

National Palace Museum of Korea houses over 40,000 artifacts and royal treasures, from the palaces of the Joseon period and the Korean Empire, of which 14 are National Treasures of South Korea. [3] It displays records, state rites, architecture, clothing, royal life, education, culture, paintings and music of the dynasty's ruling era. [ 4 ]
The museum's predecessor, the Chōsen Folk Art Museum, was founded in 1924, during Japan's occupation of Korea. The three founders were the Asakawa brothers and Yanagi Sōetsu. [3] The second museum carrying this name established on 8 November 1945 by the U.S. Government and opened on 25 April 1946 at the City Administration Memorial Hall.
The museum has a basement level with an auditorium and three ground levels with lecture rooms, a library, a permanent exhibition hall, a special exhibition hall [2] as well as a Hangeul Learning Center and a Children's Museum with a Hangeul playground. [3]

The museum depicts the evolution of Seoul from the prehistoric period to the current day. It also hosts special exhibitions. [1] The museum runs the online service Seoul History Archives. The website provides digitized museum materials to the public, free of charge. It offers materials for both non-commercial and commercial use. [2] [3]
