The history of the bar puller begins with the introduction of the NC/CNC lathes in around 1980. At this time lathes were changed to permit inexpensive and economical production of small or medium-sized batches. The bar puller serves to draw bars into the lathe without operators having to feed the machine with material each time it is required.
A chain suspension bridge - Clifton Suspension Bridge The bars may be fabricated with pin holes that are slightly undersized. If so, these are then reamed in the field. This field reaming ensures that stresses will be uniformly distributed among the several bars forming the truss element or the chain link.
A master link or quick-release link is a roller chain accessory that allows convenient connection and disconnection of a chain without the need for a chain tool. [1] It acts as a set of the chain's outer plates, so joining two sets of the chain's inner plate ends. Such master links may or may not be re-usable. [2]
Watt's linkage consists of three bars bolted together in a chain. The chain of bars consists of two end bars and a middle bar. The middle bar is bolted at each of its ends to one of the ends of each outer bar. The two outer bars are of equal length, and are longer than the middle bar. The three bars can pivot around the two bolts.
Also, a wet cable or chain would be difficult to manage. A messenger would then be used as an intermediate device. This was a continuous loop of cable or chain which would go around the capstan. The main anchor cable or chain would then be attached to the messenger for hauling using some temporary connection such as ropes called nippers.
The mechanical advantage would equal the ratio of chain link pairs required for each revolution to the net gain of chain link pairs. Put another way, the mechanical advantage would be the distance of pull required for each unit distance of gain. The mechanical advantage at the differential sprocket pair equals P 1 / P 1 − P 2 .
Modern tracks are built from modular chain links which together compose a closed chain. The links are jointed by a hinge, which allows the track to be flexible and wrap around a set of wheels to make an endless loop. The chain links are often broad, and can be made of manganese alloy steel for high strength, hardness, and abrasion resistance. [43]
A similar heavy-duty unit with a combination chain and cable became available in 1935 that was used by railroads, but lacked the success of the cable-only type units. [1] A similar tool to a come-along is a cable puller, which does not have a drum and ratchet but directly grips the cable, allowing unlimited lengths of wire rope to be used.
