Dahlonega was named as one of the best places to retire by the publication Real Estate Scorecard. [7] Dahlonega was the site of the second major Gold Rush in the United States beginning in 1829. The Dahlonega Gold Museum Historic Site which is located in the middle of the public square, was originally built in 1836 as the Lumpkin County Courthouse.

Auraria is a ghost town in Lumpkin County, Georgia, United States, southwest of Dahlonega. Its name derives from aurum , the Latin word for gold . [ 2 ] In its early days, it was also known variously as Dean , Deans , Nuckollsville , and Scuffle Town .
In 1965, some of the towns in the county began to redevelop their historic properties to attract tourists and expand the economy. Lumpkin, Omaha and Louvale all had relatively intact historic properties and commercial districts. Green Grove is an historic African-American community established by freedmen after the Civil War.
