Words in Colour is an approach to literacy invented by Caleb Gattegno. [1] Words in Colour first appeared in 1962, published simultaneously in the UK and US. Later versions were published in French ( French : Lecture en Couleurs ) and Spanish ( Spanish : Letras en Color ).
A color term (or color name) is a word or phrase that refers to a specific color. The color term may refer to human perception of that color (which is affected by visual context) which is usually defined according to the Munsell color system , or to an underlying physical property (such as a specific wavelength on the spectrum of visible light ).
Basic Color Terms: Their Universality and Evolution (1969; ISBN 1-57586-162-3) is a book by Brent Berlin and Paul Kay. Berlin and Kay's work proposed that the basic color terms in a culture, such as black, brown, or red, are predictable by the number of color terms the culture has. All cultures have terms for black/dark and white/bright.
