The Poison Girls were an English anarcho-punk band from Brighton. The singer/guitarist, Vi Subversa , was a middle-aged mother of two at the band's inception, and wrote songs that explored sexuality and gender roles, often from an anarchist perspective.
Frances Sokolov (20 June 1935 – 19 February 2016), [1] better known by her stage name Vi Subversa, was the lead singer, lyricist and rhythm guitarist of British anarcho-punk band Poison Girls. [2] Subversa was born of Ashkenazi Jewish parents.
The song was a smash hit upon its release in the winter of 1987, making it to No. 9 on the Billboard Hot 100 and establishing Poison as one of America's most popular acts of the eighties. In 2017, Billboard and OC Weekly ranked the song number one and number three, respectively, on their lists of the 10 greatest Poison songs. [10] [11]

As is the case with nearly all songs that the group released as a single for radio airplay, some of the lyrics were altered in the radio edit to remove the strong, profane language that dominated the original album version.
