ESO Science Data Archive. The European Southern Observatory Catalog is an astronomical catalog that contains a log of observations performed with the ESO telescopes at La Silla and Paranal observatories, including the APEX submillimeter telescope on Llano de Chajnantor, as well as the UKIDSS/WFCAM data obtained at the UK Infrared Telescope facility in Hawaii.
ESO Science Archive has been providing access to data from astronomical catalogues since 1988. [1] An astronomical catalogue is a list or tabulation of astronomical objects, typically grouped together because they share a common type, morphology, origin, means of detection, or method of discovery. The oldest and largest are star catalogues.
The scanning resulted in images 14,000 x 14,000 (DSS1) or 23,040 x 23,040 pixels (DSS2) in size, [17] or approximately 0.4 (DSS1) and 1.1 gigabytes (DSS2) each. The scanning of First Generation DSS takes a little under seven hours per plate to complete. Due to the large size of the images, they were compressed using an H-transform algorithm.

To enable rapid access of specific stars in the catalogue, WCSTools software numbers each star using its Guide Star region number (0001 to 9537) and a five-digit star number within each region, separated by a decimal point. sty2 lists Tycho-2 stars by number or sky region. imty2 lists the Tycho-2 stars within an IRAF or FITS image using the world coordinate system defined in its header.
