The South Shore train (referred to by SloopyJ) does go to South Bend, and there is a shuttle from the South Bend airport (where the train stops) to the stadium on game days. As for the schedule being "not frequent enough to make the return trip convenient," there is a train from South Bend back to Chicago every two hours on weekends.

Yea, like 'via chicago' said, the South Shore line will take you to Millenium Park. Here are your walking directions to the pier... 1) Walk EAST on Randolph Street to Columbus Drive 2) Walk north on Columbus Drive until you get to Illinois Street 3) Walk EAST on Illinois Street which will lead you directly to Navy Pier.

Nowadays I'm pretty sure the train comes very infrequently, maybe a few times a week. It's also a very slow moving train, rarely more than a few cars long. The closest grade crossing is Broadway so you may hear them blowing the horn from there, but you'll hear them blowing the horn from CSX's West Shore Line on the other side of town.
If you are home during rush hours then usually the trains pass ever fifteen minutes. We are about 0.5 miles from the BC line and still hear the train. Warm fumes from diesel locomotive float up so you never know where they will end up. But if this is an electric train then it is not a major concern, aside from an occasional freight/work train.
Yeah, and I bet you think most people that ride the South Shore on a regular basis are Chicagoans that work in Northwest Indiana. Its a relatively small percentage of the area population that makes up the ridership that takes those trains in.
