The Amami rabbit (Pentalagus furnessi), also known as the Ryukyu rabbit is a dark-furred species of rabbit which is found only on Amami Ōshima and Tokunoshima, two small islands between southern Kyūshū and Okinawa in Japan.
In 2015, the BBC presented a short television series called Pets – Wild at Heart about the behaviours of pets which featured the rabbits on the island. The series also showed tourists coming to feed the rabbits. [5] The ruins of the old forts and the gas factory still exist all over the island, but entry is prohibited as it is too dangerous.
Within the total area of 426.98 square kilometres (164.86 sq mi) are found some 1,819 vascular plants, 21 terrestrial mammals, 394 birds, 21 amphibians, 36 terrestrial reptiles, and 267 inland fish, including endemics such as the Amami rabbit, Okinawa rail, and Iriomote cat. [4]

Isolated from the other Amami islands, Tokunoshima is located halfway between Amami Ōshima and Okinoerabujima.
