The Ray Norbut State Fish and Wildlife Area is a 1,140-acre (460 ha) state park located near Griggsville in Pike County, Illinois. It borders on the Illinois River and is primarily made of steeply sloped bluffland that is part of the river's valley. Heavily wooded, this region is managed for whitetail deer hunting.
Devils Island Wildlife Management Area is managed as public access for hunting. It is managed, coterminously with the Union County State Fish and Wildlife Area, by the Illinois Department of Natural Resources from a full-time office in nearby Jonesboro. Goose Lake Prairie State Natural Area is a 2,537-acre (1,027 ha) state park in Illinois. More than half of the state park is a tallgrass prairie maintained as an Illinois Nature Preserve . It is located in Grundy County near the town of Morris approximately 50 miles (80 km) southwest of Chicago .
Other neighboring lakes include Lake George, Lake Calumet, Powderhorn Lake and Lake Michigan. There was also another lake that lay to the west between Wolf Lake and the river. It was called Hyde Lake and was filled in by Republic Steel. A swampy area near 130th Street and the railroad tracks is the only remnant of that lake.
Instead of being located in the relatively flat, rolling terrain characteristic of most of Illinois, the lake is located in an unglaciated zone of deep sandstone valleys and steep slopes. Devils Kitchen Lake is located in one of these valleys, and it is one of the deepest lakes in Illinois. Sections of the lake are as deep as 90 feet (27 m). [1]
