The seminary maintains that theological education leading to ordination normally requires full-time study and full participation in its common life and worship. It also believes that theological education is greatly enhanced when it is done within an ecumenical, international and cross-cultural context.
In 1910, a chapel was built as the Braddock Heights Episcopal Mission. During the 1911 Christmas holidays, the two seminarians serving at the mission decided to name the church "Emmanuel" after the Virginia Theological Seminary Chapel. In 1922, Emmanuel Episcopal Church acquired independent status with the Rev. Samuel A. Wallis.

Grammer was born in Smyrna, Delaware and studied at Johns Hopkins (B.A. 1880), the Virginia Theological Seminary (1884), and Trinity College, Hartford (S.T.D. 1895). He was ordained to the priesthood on July 3, 1889, and served parishes in Maryland, Ohio, and Virginia.
Services at Meade Chapel were led for the most part by White seminary students from the segregated Virginia Theological Seminary under the supervision of the rector of Christ Church. In 1876 the first Black minister, the Rev. John H. M. Pollard, was hired for Meade Chapel.
The last graduation class of the school was in 1949. VirginiaTheological Seminary started admitting African-American students in 1951. [5] On June 3, 1953, the school's assets and records were transferred to Virginia Theological Seminary, Alexandria, Virginia.
