St. Joan of Arc was the third high school in Mississauga to be built in partnership with the City of Mississauga sharing a public library facility and community area. In January 2007, two and half years after the school was founded, the students and staff moved into the permanent site at 3801 Thomas Street. [1]
The school is administered by the Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board. Like other members of the district, students who attend St. Oscar Romero receive teaching on religion, family life, and prayer in addition to the standard curriculum found in public schools. The school originally opened as Archbishop Romero C.S.S. in February 2005.

The school building is similar to that of St. Joseph Secondary School in Mississauga, which was modelled after Philip Pocock. The school's athletes are called the "Pocock Pirates."
