Harry Belafonte often visited and liked the Caribbean island of Bonaire. [3] Belafonte together with Maurice Neme of Oranjestad, Aruba embarked on a joint venture to create a luxurious private community on Bonaire. [4] On 3 June 1966, the construction of the neighbourhood started which was named Belnem after Belafonte and Neme.
Kralendijk (Dutch pronunciation: [ˈkraːlə(n)dɛik]) is the capital and main port of the island of Bonaire in the Caribbean Netherlands. The language spoken in the town is Papiamentu, but Dutch and English are widely used. As of 2017, the town had a population of 10,620. [1] In Papiamentu, the town is often called Playa or "beach".
The only structures on the island are some ruins of slave huts (small, single-room structures dating to the region's period of slavery), and a small open shelter on the beach facing Bonaire. The island has no running water or sanitation facilities. All of Klein Bonaire is visible from hills on the leeward side of Bonaire.
