Before being separated, the Straw Hat Pirates had planned to meet up after three days. Captain Monkey D. Luffy's message amends that to two years. Although they wish to reunite with Luffy and comfort him about his brother, Portgas D. Ace's, death, they instead take advantage of the opportune locales that Bartholomew Kuma sent them all to improve their skills.
Ace dies from his injuries. Luffy is devastated by the loss and the pirates, having failed to rescue Ace, flee. Whitebeard tries to avenge Ace, but he is killed by Blackbeard and his own crew of Impel Down escapees. Blackbeard absorbs Whitebeard's ability to create earthquakes and uses it to lay waste to Marine Headquarters.

At Amazon Lily, Luffy is still distraught because of Ace's death. Jimbei tells Luffy not to blame Ace for his actions. Enraged, Luffy tries to fight Jimbei, but the fishman easily defeats him. When Jimbei queries about what Luffy still has left, Luffy in tears tells Jimbei that he wants to see his crew.
Luffy retorts with another Red Hawk, but Hordy is still standing. Chopper reveals he now only needs one Rumble Ball for his Monster Point, which he now has full control of.
