The Bom Jesus was a Portuguese nau and Indiaman that set sail from Lisbon, Portugal, on Friday, March 7, 1533. Its fate was unknown until 2008, when its remains were discovered during diamond mining operations on the coast of Namibia , near Oranjemund .

On March 29 of the same year, the foundation of the town of Nossa Senhora da Luz e do Bom Jesus dos Pinhais Curitiba became official. Years later, it gave way to a larger church in stone and clay, completed in 1721, called the church headquarters.

In 1925, a local rancher, Dona Carolina Viera da Mota, donated lands to build a future settlement. In the same year a chapel covered with palm fronds was built. Soon, other houses (huts) were built and the settlement was called Bom Jesus. In 1953, it was made a district of Goiatuba, becoming a municipality in 1963.
On the upper level, overlooking the tomb is the Bom Jesus Basilica Art Gallery, containing the works of the Goan surrealist painter, Dom Martin. Author and fellow Jesuit Anthony De Mello was also from Goa and mentions the basilica in his writings. The Basilica of Bom Jesus is more than 408 years old and is open to the public every day.
The Convent of Bom Jesus dos Perdões was built on the first range of hills beyond the city center of Salvador. It sits on a narrow street, Rua dos Perdões below the Largo do Santo Antonio, a public square, and both the Church of Santo Antonio Além do Carmo and Forte de Santo Antônio Além do Carmo .
