1984 is a 1956 British black-and-white science fiction film, based on the 1949 novel Nineteen Eighty-Four by George Orwell, depicting a totalitarian future of a dystopian [3] society. The film followed a previous Westinghouse Studio One adaptation and a BBC-TV made-for-TV adaptation .
The first feature-length adaptation, 1984, was directed by Michael Anderson and was released in 1956. It starred Edmond O'Brien as protagonist Winston Smith with Donald Pleasence as Mr Parsons, Jan Sterling as Julia, and Michael Redgrave as O'Brien (renamed O'Connor).
O'Brien (known as O'Connor in the 1956 film adaptation of the novel) is a fictional character and the main antagonist in George Orwell's 1949 novel Nineteen Eighty-Four. The protagonist Winston Smith, living in a dystopian society governed by the Party, feels strangely drawn to Inner Party member O'Brien. Orwell never reveals O'Brien's first name.
