Ruby ring. A ring is a round band, usually made of metal, worn as ornamental jewelry. The term "ring" by itself denotes jewellery worn on the finger; when worn as an ornament elsewhere, the body part is specified within the term, e.g., earrings, neck rings, arm rings, and toe rings.
The ring is complete and dates to the 15th Century AD. It has a ruby and an emerald set into the double-bezel and floriate, chip-carved decoration on each side of the band. The side decoration was originally filled with niello. It measures 19.7 mm in length, 7.1 mm in width and has an internal diameter of 15.6 mm. It weighs 4.42 g.
The origin of the ring design is inspired by Jesus telling St. Peter, who was by trade a fisherman, "I will make you a fisher of men." The Ring of the Fisherman is a large gold ring with a round or, more recently, an ovoid, bezel. As recently as the 1970s, it was a large medallion shape.
The ring has a large ruby etched with a St George's Cross and bordered by 26 diamonds. Since 1830 it has been on permanent loan from Windsor Castle to Edinburgh Castle where it is displayed with the Honours of Scotland. [188] The coronation ring of Mary II survives in the Portland Collection at Welbeck Abbey. [189]
All these items of jewelry bear the same markings as the top of the ring: the words "West Point", the year the Cadet graduated (e.g., West Point 2005), and stones matching the cadet's class ring. By longstanding custom, many graduates choose to present a miniature of the West Point ring as an engagement ring.
The gemstone at the front of the Imperial State Crown. The Black Prince's Ruby is a large, irregular cabochon red spinel weighing 170 carats (34 g) set in the cross pattée above the Cullinan II diamond at the front of the Imperial State Crown of the United Kingdom. [1]
