NIT Rourkela was established as Regional Engineering College (REC) Rourkela on 15 August 1961. Chief Minister of Odisha , Biju Patnaik provided the land for it, approximately 1200 acres. [ 7 ] Its foundation stone was laid by the first Prime Minister of India , Jawaharlal Nehru .
