The Old Sugar Mill of Koloa was the first major sugarcane plantation in Hawaii in 1835. [ 9 ] [ 10 ] Missionary Daniel Dole and his family opened a boarding school for English -speaking children, sometimes called the Koloa Academy, in 1855.
In 1948, Grove Farm purchased the 3,000-acre (1,200 ha) McBryde plantation which included the Koloa sugar mill. By 1974, sugar production was leased to Alexander & Baldwin, while the company moved into residential and resort real estate operations. [4]
Hawaiians resisted the lease of the land and initially forbade the sale of provisions to plantation managers. [7] The two groups eventually struck an uneasy partnership that resulted in multiple conflicts as time progressed. Although 980 acres (400 ha) were leased from King Kamehameha III, only 12 acres (4.9 ha) were planted in September 1835.
