Monroe Transit has a long, rich history. In 1903, at the urging of Mayor A.A. Forsythe, the Monroe City Council voted to begin the first municipal railroad in the United States. The city awarded a $100,000 contract to the Westinghouse Electrical Co. in 1904 to build the city-owned street railway.
Created in 1906 as a four-line street railroad, the Monroe Transit System now provides 13 fixed bus routes covering most areas of the city, and three demand-response buses serving the disabled. The bayou was impounded by an earthen levee in 1935 thereby diverting the flow to Bartholomew Lake and into Bayou Desiard. As a result, for a time the city of Monroe was known as the natural gas capital of the world. The new industry generated many jobs.
