San Mateo is situated in the southwestern part of Isabela. It is bounded on the north by Aurora, on the northeast by Cabatuan, on the east by Cauayan, on the east-southeast by Alicia, on the south by Ramon and on the west Alfonso Lista in the Province of Ifugao. San Mateo is 54 kilometers (34 mi) from Ilagan and 350 kilometers (220 mi) from Manila.

It is bounded on the north by the municipality of Cabagan; on the east by the municipality of Divilacan, on the south by the City of Ilagan, the capital of Isabela; and on the west by the Cagayan River and the municipality of Delfin Albano.

The administration of President Sergio Osmeña annexed the area presently composed of Alfonso Lista to present-day San Mateo, Isabela. However, due to opposition by local settlers in the area, a major part of the area was later transferred to Mayoyao of then Ifugao sub-province of the old Mountain Province. [8]

Isabela's 3rd congressional district is one of the six congressional districts of the Philippines in the province of Isabela. It has been represented in the House of Representatives since 1987. [3] The district consists of the west-central municipalities of Alicia, Angadanan, Cabatuan, Ramon and San Mateo. [4]
Eveland Christian College is a private nonsectarian [1] school in San Mateo, Isabela. It began as Eveland Memorial College in 1947, named after William Perry Eveland. It was renamed Eveland Junior College in the 1970s, and renamed again in 2000 to its current name. It offers primary, secondary, and tertiary education.
