Upper Valley Mall was a shopping mall located near Springfield, Ohio, northeast of Dayton. Built in 1971 by the Edward J. DeBartolo Corporation of Youngstown, the mall at closing had no anchor stores. The Upper Valley Mall was located west of Springfield, off US 68, in German Township, Clark County.
In 1937, the company opened as a single store in Waterbury, Connecticut. It gradually expanded to over 350 warehouse-like outlets, based in 36 states. In the mid-1950s, the Robert Hall shop launched on 2725 6th Ave. in Huntington, West Virginia. The company already had retail facilities in Portsmouth, Ohio, and Morgantown, West Virginia. [4]
Developed during Springfield's industrial growth of the 1850s to the 1920s, the South Fountain Avenue Historic District encompasses about 15 square blocks south of downtown Springfield, across the street from South High School. Among its prominent early residents were Oliver S. Kelly, [1] William N. Whiteley, and Francis Bookwalter. [2]
The company was founded in Cleveland, Ohio, in 1914, when Mortimer Slater, with Charles Anson Bond and Lester Cohen, founded the stores as a retail outlet for their suit manufacturing company. Charles Anson Bond, whose name was chosen for its market value and meaning left Cleveland for Columbus, Ohio where he opened a branch of the company.

Springfield was founded in 1800, [2]: 129 but for its first half-century of existence, the land now included within the district was used for agricultural purposes. [2]: 458 However, by the 1840s, Springfield had grown eastward from its original core, and the brothers Gustavus and William Foos platted some of their land along High Street for residential purposes in 1848.
