Carmel (/ ˈ k ɑːr m ə l /) is a suburban city in Hamilton County, Indiana, United States, immediately north of Indianapolis. With a population of 99,757 as of the 2020 census , the city spans 49 square miles (130 km 2 ) across Clay Township and is bordered by the White River to the east and the Boone County line to the west.
317 covered all of Northern and Central Indiana until 1948, when 219 was created. Central Indiana remained under the 317 banner until 1997, when growth in and around Indianapolis prompted the creation of 765. The 317 area code was, in turn, overlaid by 463 in 2016.
Despite Indianapolis's rapid growth during the second half of the 20th century, and the accompanying increased number demand, this configuration remained in place for 48 years.
