Gowerton (Welsh: Tre-gŵyr ⓘ) is a large village and community, about 4 miles (6 km) north west of Swansea city centre, Wales. Gowerton is often known as the gateway to the Gower Peninsula . Gowerton's original name was Ffosfelin.
Gowerton station was opened as Gower Road by the South Wales Railway on Tuesday 1 August 1854. [2] It was later renamed Gowerton, following a request to the railway company by the parish vestry, and from 1950 became known as Gowerton North to distinguish it from the Gowerton South railway station which served the now closed Pontarddulais to Swansea Victoria section of the Heart of Wales Line ...
The name was changed to Gowerton South on 1 July 1886 to avoid confusion with another station in Gowerton. The station closed to both passengers and goods traffic on 15 June 1964. [1] [2] After closure the station was demolished and the site is now occupied by a road removing all trace of the railway.

The town lost its train service in 1964 under the Beeching Axe; the nearest train station is now Gowerton railway station, 1.8 miles (2.9 km) to the south. [ citation needed ] The primary route through Gorseinon is the A4240 road which crosses the town centre as High Street and Alexandra Road.
The area between Dunvant and Gowerton was once quite heavily industrialised. with four nearby collieries Killan, Bishwell, Bryn Mawr and Dunvant. Bishwell and Bryn Mawr to the south of Gowerton were short-lived and closed in the 1870s. However, the collieries in Dunvant have a longer history. Dunvant closed again in 1914.
