the definition of mechanical keyboard is actually quite ambiguous, but the model m is considered mechanical even though it uses a membrane. if you like the retro aesthetic and loud keyboards, you will love the model m. otherwise, your money would be better spent elsewhere. I personally haven't had any trouble with the blue cube with my old 1391401 Model M. It even works with my AT Model F. If you get a buckling spring keyboard, like a Model M, I don't much see the point in specifically getting an Model M. Maybe you prefer the case a bit more, but if you care about the keyswitches -- which is kind of the point of a mechanical keyboard -- Unicomp gets you the same thing. I don't own an M, but I've used them.
With the return to office coming up, I find myself needing to get a small mechanical keyboard I can take back and forth to the office. For people that have experimented with all the different Cherry MX clone varieties out there, what switch do you think comes closest to the feel of a Model M. I had someone recommend box navy switches a while ago.
Due to technicalities, the Mini M is also not a 10-key rollover keyboard. It has got a matrix designed around a lot of combinations that can block at just two keys (especially on the right-hand side of the keyboard). As such, a few ten-key combinations will work on it. But the average size of key combinations is lower than that, in my experience.
