The Verilog Procedural Interface (VPI), originally known as PLI 2.0, is an interface primarily intended for the C programming language. It allows behavioral Verilog code to invoke C functions, and C functions to invoke standard Verilog system tasks.
The original Verilog simulator, Gateway Design's Verilog-XL was the first (and only, for a time) Verilog simulator to be qualified for ASIC (validation) sign-off. After its acquisition by Cadence Design Systems, Verilog-XL changed very little over the years, retaining an interpreted language engine, and freezing language-support at Verilog-1995.
Similarly, functions implemented in SystemVerilog can be called from Foreign language (C/C++ or System C); such functions are called Export functions. DPIs allow transfer of data between two domains through function arguments and return.
Classes can be parameterized by type, providing the basic function of C++ templates. However, template specialization and function templates are not supported. SystemVerilog's polymorphism features are similar to those of C++: the programmer may specifically write a virtual function to have a
File I/O has been improved by several new system tasks. And finally, a few syntax additions were introduced to improve code readability (e.g. always @*, named parameter override, C-style function/task/module header declaration). Verilog-2001 is the version of Verilog supported by the majority of commercial EDA software packages.
System Verilog is the first major HDL to offer object orientation and garbage collection. Using the proper subset of hardware description language, a program called a synthesizer, or logic synthesis tool , can infer hardware logic operations from the language statements and produce an equivalent netlist of generic hardware primitives [ jargon ...
List of free analog and digital electronic circuit simulators, available for Windows, macOS, Linux, and comparing against UC Berkeley SPICE. The following table is split into two groups based on whether it has a graphical visual interface or not.
The Vivado High-Level Synthesis compiler enables C, C++ and SystemC programs to be directly targeted into Xilinx devices without the need to manually create RTL. [15] [16] [17] Vivado HLS is widely reviewed to increase developer productivity, and is confirmed to support C++ classes, templates, functions and operator overloading.
