As Walmart celebrates the 62nd anniversary of its first store opening on July 2, 1962, let's take a look back at the early beginnings of one of the world's largest retailers.
The Bomb Pop was invented by James S. Merritt and D.S. Abernethy in Kansas City, Missouri, on July 30, 1955. [2] In 1971, Bomb Pop was trademarked. [3] When D.S. Abernethy's company, Merritt Foods, closed down in 1991, Wells' Dairy bought the business, including Bomb Pops.
As the Supercenter proved to be a much more profitable experiment, Walmart renamed the stores "Wal-Mart's Hypermart USA" in April 1990, and eventually began either converting them to Supercenter operations or closing them. As of 2023, two of the former Hypermart USA locations still operate as Walmarts while the other two have been demolished.
