Jamaica College was founded in 1789, making it the sixth oldest continually running high school in the country, [citation needed] after Wolmer's Boys', one of the Wolmer's Schools (1729), Manning's School (1738), St. Jago High School (1744), Rusea's High School (1777) and Titchfield High School (1786). [6]
It was granted degree awarding powers in 1986 and a governing council and academic board were established. The college gained university status, under its current name, on 1 September 1995, and permanent provision for the university was made by the University of Technology, Jamaica Act 27, which became law on 29 June 1999. [2]
The only teacher training institution to survive into the 20th Century and that remains until today is The Mico University College in Kingston, Jamaica. Its founding in 1835 makes it the oldest teacher training college in the Western Hemisphere and one of the oldest in the world rivaling the famed Battersea College in England.
Northern Caribbean University is the oldest private tertiary institution in Jamaica, and was first known as West Indian Training School. It began with 8 students in 1907, as an institution offering courses only up to the twelfth grade. Following a temporary closure in 1913 it resumed operations in 1919.
The Mico University College is managed by a board of directors and The Mico Foundation which has a 12-member board. The president is a member of each board. He is the managing director of the Foundation. The president of the University College as of 2015 is Asburn Pinnock. [4] He is assisted by three vice presidents.
