St. Joseph was first platted in 1829, and the first lighthouse at the site, located on the shore, was built in 1832. Construction began on harbor piers in 1836, and by 1848 a beacon light had been established on the pier. The onshore lighthouse was replaced in 1859, and a new pierhead beacon was constructed on the south pier in 1870.
The St. Joseph river mouth was straightened through a channel and piers were added later. The first lighthouse in St. Joseph contends with Chicago's original lighthouse as the first to be built on Lake Michigan. Newburyport changed its name to St. Joseph when it was incorporated on March 7, 1834. [11] The city was incorporated June 5, 1891.
The Ninth District Lighthouse Depot is a collection of historic structures located at 1 Lighthouse Lane in St. Joseph, Michigan. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1993. [1] It now houses the Saint Joseph River Yacht Club. [2]

During the Big Blow of 1905, twenty-seven wooden vessels were lost. The steamer Joseph S. Fay ran aground, and a part of its hull rests on the beach approximately 200 feet (61 m) north of the lighthouse. There is a Michigan historical marker honoring Forty Mile Light, there is a marker concerning the "Graveyard of Ships". [10] The marker states:
It was moved to the M-86 location in St. Joseph County in 1938/39 and was in place for nearly 80 years. In 2016/2017, it was moved again, 50 miles away to Crystal Springs Street over the Dowagiac River in Cass County .
