In addition to both municipal and county law enforcement agencies, Huntington is also home to a detachment of the West Virginia State Police. The city of Huntington is protected by approximately 100 professional firefighters of the Huntington Fire Department, founded in 1897. In 1890, two railway surveyors from the state of Virginia in the United States etched the name of their birthplace on a boulder near the farm Merriespruit.
