James Gregory (December 23, 1911 – September 16, 2002) [1] [2] was an American character actor who played roles such as Schaffer in Al Capone (1959), the McCarthy-like Sen. John Iselin in The Manchurian Candidate (1962), the audacious General Ursus in Beneath the Planet of the Apes (1970), and crusty Inspector Frank Luger in the television sitcom Barney Miller (1975–1982).

Early life. Garner was born James Scott Bumgarner in 1928 in Denver, Oklahoma [ 2] (now part of Norman, with some of which now under Lake Thunderbird ). His parents were Weldon Warren Bumgarner (1901–1986), [ 3] a widower, and Mildred Scott ( née Meek; 1907–1933), who died five years after his birth. His father was of part German ancestry.

He is known primarily for his roles as Dr. George Alonzo "Gonzo" Gates, the young surgeon assistant of Dr. Trapper John McIntyre (played by Pernell Roberts) on the CBS series Trapper John, M.D. (1979–86), and as ruthless business tycoon Michael Sharpe in the CBS series Falcon Crest (1989–1990).
